How many frames per second is real life

There’s a continuous talk amongst gamers, techies and PC enthusiasts on how many frames we’re living in? So how man frames per second is real life? What are we able to perceive?

Well, it’s not your typical 24 fps – that many experts claim – it’s much more complex than that.

Humans don’t perceive reality in a set amount of frames per second. It’s a continuous perception of the presence of objects and motion blur coupled with flashes and strobes to create these high frame rates for our eyes artificially.

So it’s not as easy as saying “real life is 24fps”.

What we do know, though, is that there is a diminishing return in what frames per second people are able to perceive.

While some people may be able to perceive the difference between 30 fps and 60 fps, the higher you go, the less they will be able to differentiate the specific frames per second. However, in rare cases fighter pilots have been recorded spotting 1/255th of a frame (Source). Which is incredible fast.

As we don’t want to get into the full nitty gritty here, just give this awesome video a watch.

Why does frame rate still matter?

There’s often talk about 24fps being more than enough, as most movies and shows are shot in 24fps. Some even say, that anything above 15fps is enough for a continuos perceiption of images.

However, any gamer out there will agree, that higher frame rates DO play a role when it comes to perceiption, gameplay and fluidity.

Just compare the gameplay in games  like Counterstrike, Valorant or Fortnite and you will see a huge difference between 30fps, 60fps, 120fps and 240fps.

Here is an awesome video that compares the different frame rates in CS:GO.

As long as your gaming monitor supports the high refresh rates and your hardware can hit those numbers, of course.
