Best DSLR Models for 2023

In recent years, smartphone cameras have improved significantly, making them great contenders against DSLRs. Our previous post “iPhone vs DSLR” visits some of a DSLR’s pros and cons, highlighting differences in photo quality and portability. For many, DSLRs may be too cumbersome and expensive— making them less worthwhile for a hobby or occasional use. However, a DSLR remains a must-have for professional photographers and enthusiasts looking for consistent photo quality and greater versatility in their capture settings.

There are plenty of cameras you can consider on the market, so it’s important to assess your photography habits and the type of images you plan to capture. If you’re interested in getting a DSLR camera, listed below are the best DSLR models for 2023.

Nikon D850

Despite being a 2017 model, the Nikon D850 remains a reliable full-frame DSLR, especially when paired with its battery grip. It’s no wonder the Nikon D850 is also one of the most highly-rated DSLR cameras available on Adorama, owing to its 45.7MP resolution, seven up to nine frames-per-second (FPS) continuous shooting capability, and dynamic ISO range. The model houses an excellent autofocus system, with as many as 153 focus points, 99 cross-type sensors, and a dedicated AF processor. Given these features, the Nikon D850 is best for capturing low-light environments, making this model a go-to option for nighttime and wildlife photography.

Canon EOS 90D

For those with a larger budget, the Canon EOS 90D is a great option for photography enthusiasts. It’s the first model to have a 32.5MP APS-C sensor. Combined with its 1300-shot battery and uncropped 4K video recording, the Canon EOS 90D fares better than the average mirrorless camera. For those who enjoy using a DSLR’s optical viewfinder (OVF) or rely on LCD screen projection, this model provides nearly 100% frame coverage for complete viewing. Considering the aforementioned features and its sharp autofocus, the EOS 90D makes for a good model for sports photography.

Pentax K-1 Mark II

Pentax only has a limited selection of full-frame DSLRs, but models like Pentax K-1 Mark II are as good as bigger SLR brands. With a 36.4MP full-frame sensor, shake-reduction, and a built-in GPS, the DSLR provides quality pictures and videos at a modest price. In June 2022, Pentax’s parent company Ricoh announced function-expansion firmware for the Pentax K-1, K-1 Mark II, and K-3 Mark III DSLR cameras, allowing users to enable season-specific Custom Image modes to enhance outdoor landscapes. This pairs well with Pentax cameras’ good weatherproofing, which makes them suitable for photography outdoors.

Nikon D7200

Comparable to Canon’s EOS 90D, the Nikon D7500 provides similar features at a lower price. As a mid-range camera, it gives a 20.9MP sensor and an eight FPS burst— decent all-around specs for photography enthusiasts. This form is upgraded from its predecessor Nikon D7200, including a more sensitive metering sensor and touchscreen LCD for more straightforward navigation. It’s important to note that this model has been discontinued, but many photographers continue to sell these second-hand. As mentioned by the BBC on second-hand tech, buying used cameras not only helps you save more money but also enables you to help minimize e-waste polluting the environment.

While smartphones have become commonplace for many, more is needed to beat the picture quality and technical flexibility of DSLR cameras. Make sure to visit our website TechImperatives for more buying guides and other technical information.
